Entreat: Inking a Tearful Crowd | Inktober Day 29

Image
There will always be people who bring us together. ... ... Hi, This one took a while to compose and in some way, it shows that I am an amateur and still working on my techniques. Finding different faces to draw was fun though. The official inktober prompt for day 29 was 'united' and in the current world news, it really feels like we need some people who give us hope for something greater. ... ... Materials used: Uni-ball eye micro UB-150 black waterproof & fade-proof Brustro Technical Pen 0.1 microns Homemade India Ink I wasn't planning to use an ink wash in this piece but changed my mind halfway through. I also didn't really use construction lines for each face which, in hindsight, I know understand why people emphasize on them no matter how skilled you become. This was a good practice study and I'll revisit this concept in the future for sure. Thanks again for watching! :) xoxo P.S. Please let me know in the comments

Legacy: People Walking in One-Point Perspective | Inktober Day 22

Image
We follow the paths laid down by necessity and choice, until time reminds us that it is now our legacy too. ... ... Hi, I really enjoyed drawing this one because drawing a woman in traditional apparel used to be one of my staples as a kid. Of course, then, I wouldn't make construction lines and just free-draw the whole thing as I felt like it. Sometimes, I wonder if there is any value in learning the science behind the art... hmm. ... ... As you may have realized by now, coloring is not my strong suit. It never has been and only lately, have I started to use it in an effort to understand it. So, my original intention was to have a grungy look but just before I started using colored pencils for this piece, I changed my mind. I instead decided to leave the desert look in the background empty of color and make the characters have vibrant life-like colors instead. I think it's ended up looking like a cartoon-ish approach. In other news, this piece was drawn in o

Roots: Surrealism in Ink | Inktober Day 20

Image
The roots of heritage are deep. ... ... Hi, Though I'd completed this drawing during the inktober 2017 month, I have been lazy about posting this video. I made this for day 20 of inktober for the official prompt of 'deep'. ... ... It's easy for most of us to be super critical of our work but I am very happy and proud of this piece. The inspiration was a picture of a tree that had been freshly cut down and you could see the rings and the bark cracking and splitting from the impact. ROOTS was also my first attempt at drawing surrealism art. This was drawn on 8x6 cardstock with micron pens. In hindsight, I wish I had done a better job with the composition and lineart. But, I am incredibly proud of the way this artwork turned out. BUY 'ROOTS' ART PRINT HERE (click on the image to go to the product page) I hope you like it. Thanks again for watching! :) xoxo P.S. Lines: Ink on Brown Paper - Inktober Day 8

Image
LINES Lines are straight, curved, sometimes crooked, edgy, wavy...they often lead back to themselves and join together to form shapes. No matter what, they are always connecting dots to reveal a beautiful larger world. ... ... Hello, I am running a day behind in this 31-day daily art challenge but I plan to catch up soon. Today's artwork is a kinda remake of some floor art I had done years ago. So, every year, I do traditional Indian floor art called Alpana, Muggu or Rangoli, depending on which part of India you ask. In case you are not aware, most households in India have some form of floor art in lieu of a welcome mat. Unlike a welcome mat however, this artwork is washed away and drawn differently every day using rice flour or in today's world, chalk. It's typically large enough to cover your whole patio or at least the walkway to your front door. They can range from being complex geometric patterns with detailed mathematical calculations forming optical i

Inked: Don't be shy - Inktober Day 7

Image
INKED When I need a reminder that there are shapes on my body that I chose. ... ... Hi! I think I had the 7-day itch or something. It was one of those days I couldn't get the artwork to match the way I had imagined it. I must have redrawn this entire piece at least 60 times trying to get it just right even though it probably was okay the first time round. SMH. It's true that overthinking things is futile. In the entire Inktober prompt list, this was the first one that I could clearly see in my mind's eye and I think that's why I wasn't satisfied just to have it be 'okay'. This is also the seventh piece in my perspective series and follows the inktober prompt of 'Shy' showing a woman getting a tattoo. Materials used are: Brustro Technical pen 0.05 microns and 0.3 microns Homemade India Ink: How I made it is here Hot pressed 300 gsm paper Thanks again for watching! xoxo -----------------------------------------------

Sword: Pure Line Art for Inktober Day 6

Image
SWORD People cry every time I wield this badass sword and cut-ana my way into everyone's heart. ... I'll see myself out, thanks.😂 ------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------ Hi! This is the sixth piece that serves the dual purpose of being an inktober contender as well as my bid to applying perspective in my artwork, whether in thought or in composition or both. Today's inktober prompt was 'Sword' and it seemed quite apt to just call this piece, 'Sword'. :) Unlike the other perspective studies I have done so far, which have been one-point perspective, this is in two-point perspective. Now, I know what you are wondering, most people draw in perspective instinctively, and that's true. I do the same. Which is probably why I really have to fight my urge to abandon the solid rules of drawing in perspective, failing miserably at times. In today's work, I drew a knife being p

Journey: Ink Wash - Inktober Day 5

Image
JOURNEY Don't need long legs to travel long distances or live a long life - just a long memory of hope. -------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- Hi! This is the fifth episode of the perspective series as well as the fifth day for the Inktober Challenge. The official Inktober prompt for the day is 'Long', so...😊😏 In this piece, I have used a simplified version of the inside of a typical train in India. The main focus, as I have been trying to get better at it, is to draw in perspective. Especially human figures. Materials used are: Fabriano Accademia 120gsm paper Homemade India Ink - I wrote about it here: http://www.rumiandray.com/2017/01/diy-india-ink-permanent-waterproof.html Round Brushes No. 3 and no. 0 Parker Quink black ink bottle for the ink wash Brustro Technical pen 0.3 microns I was feeling a little under the weather today and hope to get better tomorrow so that I can

Ganga: Watercolor - Inktober Day 4

Image
GANGA Her divinity is immediate and everlasting, but only for as long as the river survives -------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- Hello, This is the first time I tried any kind of brush pen ever. This is the 'Spring' set from Akashi-ya SAI Watercolor brush pens. At first, I wasn't sure how to grip the brush pens. Should I hold it upright? Should I tilt it like I use paintbrushes? It took me a while to find my rhythm. I still have a long way to go before I can even say that I am comfortable with them. But I am happy that I was able to followthrough with my goal to try new things no matter what. I also used a few pens from the Brustro technical pens set, namely, the 0.05mm nib. As for the composition of this piece. Today's official inktober prompt is 'Underwater'. I had decided almost instantly that I would like to draw a depiction or interpretation of one of India's mo

Anger - Inktober Day 3

Image
ANGER Holding on to anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die. ~ Gautama Buddha -------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- Hello, Everyday when I hear about gun violence, like the one that happened in Las Vegas recently, it's easy to normalize the fact that objects that have no purpose other than to kill are acceptable to be found next to things that make our lives better. Hopefully, I can use an everyday object like a ballpoint pen to help cope. 'Anger' has been drawn on Fabriano Accademia 120 gsm paper with a Papermate Medium point ballpoint pen. The prompt for this piece is 'poison' for day 3 from the official Inktober 2017 prompt list. I used a few reference pictures from the Internet of angry faces and tried to focus on key micro expressions that show true anger when drawing an angry face. Please let me know what you think in the comments below. T

Fences - Inktober Day 2

Image
FENCES Good fences make good neighbors. Reinforced ones make better...arguments? -------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- Hello, 'Fences' was drawn on Fabriano Accademia 120 gsm paper with homemade India Ink . It's always tough trying to compose anything. It does boost some level of creativity when you have a prompt list to work off of. The prompt for this piece is 'divided', from the official Inktober 2017 prompt list. The individual components for this piece look intuitive and now that I look at it, it might look unrefined. Having said that, I did enjoy brush inking and letting my hand direct the lines. This is also the second episode of my perspective series where, either by composition or by a viewpoint, I want to learn drawing in perspective. Please let me know what you think in the comments below. Thanks again for watching! xoxo -----------------------------------------------

Winds: Drawing Apus pacificus | Inktober Day 1

Image
Winds can carry you but you choose the direction you fly. Find your direction, and the winds will change to carry you there. Hi! It's October and thousands of people are planning to take the Inktober challenge. What's the Inktober Challenge? Inktober is a 31-day daily art challenge in October every year with a focus on drawing in ink or inking, started by Jake Parker in 2009. Thousands of artists get their inking gear out to show off their inking skills and talk about this challenge every year. The excitement is real and the thrill to draw more inspires more and more people every time October comes around. Though the focus is on inking, I'm going to focus on learning how to draw in perspective. This is episode 1. Materials This was drawn on Fabriano Accademia 120gsm paper using Stabilo point 88 no.96 pen and Brustro Technical Pens. Inspiration The official prompt for the first day of Inktober is 'Swift'. So, I decided to draw Apus pacificus, sc

Ganesh The Warrior: Watercolor Painting

Image
Gods need interpreters too. ... ... Hi! 'Ganesh The Warrior' is in watercolor and pencil, drawn on hot pressed 300gsm paper. This is my second watercolor painting ever! I know right? I hear the gasp too. :) ... ... My first watercolor painting is here. Well, you can actually call this my first watercolor painting because it doesn't use any other medium to enhance any part of the artwork. I did use a regular mechanical pencil to add shading to the weapons. I have always been more inclined to sketching or using oil pastels (that's my jam, by the way) or any forms of inks or pencils. I have always been more inclined to sketching or using oil pastels (that's my jam, by the way) or any forms of inks or pencils. Now, I am trying to explore watercolor, and painting in general, because I want to learn more. After watching countless videos and artists with mad skeelz wielding a paintbrush, I have been trying to think in color and not just lines. T

HIDING: Watercolor & Ink Painting

Image
HIDING Why are people characterized in black and white but we readily accept all of nature's colors? Let's be honest. This video looks rough. The lighting is horrible. Nothing is steady. The music is too loud. It's all at an odd angle. Quality is bad. Etc. etc. I was planning to record me painting my first watercolor artwork for the first time just as a trial, but ended up going through the whole rigmarole anyway. In hindsight, I should have probably taken a smaller piece to work with. I was oddly anxious about having my really old camera on and it felt kinda awkward since I couldn't figure out if it needed more or less light (now I know that it needs more, of course - no need to mess up my eyes). Because it was constantly recording, I kept working fast in some places and then, would completely forget it was there for large swaths of time. So much so, that when I played back the footage, the majority of it was literally me watching paint dry (hahaha
